Being the county seat town, we also hold the Decatur County Courthouse, county sheriffs office, and county wide EMS. Parks and Recreation

Leon is very fortunate to be located in the beautiful rolling hills of southern Iowa. The abundance of trees and water make for a exhilarating experience during the fall seasons. Leon is located next to a large lake that is utilized for fishing and hunting. The other side of the lake is used for recreational camping and contains a beach for swimmers.

Leon also contains many parks within the city limits. Most notably is the new swimming pool and park. Leon also contains a ball diamond complex for the city league baseball and softball programs. During the fall, winter, and spring the Parks and Recs department holds athletic camps and seasons for the children in our community.

Leon is the site for a nationally recognized Rodeo. This event takes place over the 4th of July, and has many other activities associated with it. These include a parade that contains over 150 entries, a Fireworks display on the evening of the 4th, food, and a demolition derby.

Leon, being the county seat town of Decatur County, also host the Decatur County Fair. This Fair is a unique opportunity for everyone to showcase their skills, especially the youth involved in 4H. Many of our entries in 4H have received state recognition for their projects. This fair is one of the best showcases for livestock in the state.

During the winter, before Christmas, Leon hosts their annual Leon Noel celebration to kick off the holiday season. This festival includes a large craft show, caroling, and pictures with Santa Claus. Other activities are associated with this event that create a wonderful holiday spirit.

The Leon Volunteer Fire Department hosts an annual pancake breakfast each year. Pancakes are made to order with home grown fruits added for any flavor. Also the department puts on an annual Haunted Forest at Nine Eagles State Park just south of Leon. This is a neat family event as guests walk a dark and haunted path in the forests.

Traditions For Families

Leon also offers many traditions that build strong families. We are the home to several churches that cover all denominations. We also host a “Thursdays in the Park” every Thursday night during the summer months. This activity has many singing and instrumental groups coming to the amphitheater in the Swimming Pool park to entertain the crowds. Local community businesses sponsor the groups for community entertainment. Part of the traditions of Leon include the strong school support of our academics and athletic activities. Central Decatur Schools has an outstanding academic and athletic tradition that will continue into the future.

Leon also offers many family organizations that are dedicated to youth. We have strong youth organizations such as; Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, 4H, Clover Kids, FFA, FCCLA, ROCCS, and many church related youth organizations. Central Decatur also supports a strong PTO and Booster organizations.

Leon is a safe environment to raise a family. We uphold strong family values and forever work to keep violence, drugs, and crime out of our community. We strive to make Leon the best place in Iowa to raise a family.
